The love for film can stretch from going to the theater all the way to spending almost a decade recreating a favorite film, shot for shot. That’s actually happened to three young boys from Mississippi, after experiencing the wonder of “Raiders of the Lost Ark” back when it was first released.

In 1982, they embarked on a journey worthy of Indiana Jones himself: shooting a shot for shot replica of the Spielberg classic, over the course of seven years. With the action-filled airplane sequence beyond their capabilities at the time, the film remained in purgatory until the boys came back together, over twenty years together, to wrap up their magnum opus. That level of love for film caught the attention of Drafthouse Films, which picked up “Raiders!: The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made,” a documentary on the project. In conjunction with the recreation, Drafthouse has released a shot for shot replica of the original “Raiders” trailer.

The trailer above represents all that is great about movies and what they can do for us. The replication is not only admirable in its similarities, but evokes something bigger, when you think about the fun that went into it. And that’s exactly what the documentary hopes to capture.

Per the official release, “featuring interviews with John Rhys Davies, Eli Roth and more, ‘Raiders!: The Story of the Greatest Fan Film Ever Made’ is just that: the story of this long-gestating project’s culmination, chronicling the friend’s dedication to their artistic vision-mixed in with some movie magic-to create a personal, epic love letter to a true modern classic.”

The film is on tour in various cities over the next two months, from June 2 to August 4. Check out the complete schedule of the release.
