As time goes on, the amount and type of content produced on the internet rapidly increases. So, for the sixth time, the Streamy Awards will aim to tackle the tough task of honoring the best of online video as well as the brains behind it all.
The producers of the awards, Dick Clark Productions and Tubefilter, have just announced that submissions for the Streamys are now open. With that expansion of internet entertainment of the past years, the show will also be expanding to encompass new phenomenons and recent trends, adding three new categories: Virtual Reality and 360° Video, Live and Feature Film.
“Innovation has always been a hallmark of the online video community,” said Streamy Awards creator Drew Baldwin in a statement. “Our new awards reflect the pioneering spirit and current state of the industry, while also embracing the passion and engagement of online video creators.”
In addition to the new categories, the show will also continue to open up one of the nominations in each category for the fans to decide — as the fans have a rather unique, and arguably deeper connection with this type of content than others do with other entertainment. Those nominations will open on July 11.
“Audience engagement and interaction is a cornerstone of online video,” added Streamy Awards creator Josh Cohen in a statement. “It’s important for us to give our audience the opportunity to help determine and honor the best creators and content in the space.”
The fans will also have complete say on the winners of the Audience Choice Awards for Entertainer of the Year and Show of the Year, but the rest of the nominations and awards will be mulled over by the Streamys Blue Ribbon Panel, which is made up of esteemed creators, executives and experts in the sphere of online video entertainment.
Last year’s event proved to be a social powerhouse on the day that it occurred, garnering nearly half a million tweets with millions of interactive users. The producers hope to continue that kind of success this year. “This year marks the fourth year that dick clark productions and Tubefilter have brought together creators, fans and the industry for the Streamy Awards,” said Ariel Elazar, Executive Vice President of Brand, Marketing, and Digital Strategy for Dick Clark Productions. “Digital creators continue to be a vital component to entertainment across all platforms, and we look forward to growing upon the success of last year’s show.”
