Depending on how you look at it, young Louis Drax (Aiden Longworth) is either very, very lucky or tremendously unlucky. Having survived eight near-death accidents — one for each year of his life, a pretty terrible way to demarcate life-threatening injuries — Louis falls (literally) into another terrible accident when he tumbles of a steep cliff and right into a coma. On his ninth birthday. Something’s not right here, right?
Based on Liz Jensen’s bestselling novel of the same name, Alexandre Aja’s newest film attempts to unravel the mystery of little Louis Drax while he sleeps off his latest mishap in said coma, unable to wake up to the real world because, well, who could possibly blame him? Louis’ story is made all the more complicated by the introduction of scads of other suspicious characters, from his “violent” father (played by Aaron Paul) to a too-perfect mother who definitely looks like she’s hiding something (Sarah Gadon) to a brand new doctor who uses “unorthodox techniques” to probe the poor kid’s brain (Jamie Dornan).
What’s the story with Louis? Was he pushed or did he fall? Why has one child been through so much trauma? Who is really to blame? Is ever going to wake up from that coma? And, oh yeah, what’s that terrifying monster that pops up in this trailer?
“The 9th Life of Louis Drax” will open on September 2. Check out the trailer below.
