Nate Parker’s “The Birth of a Nation” has been among the most buzzed-about, anticipated films of the year since it premiered in Park City this January. The slavery drama set a Sundance record when it was acquired by Fox Searchlight for $17.5 million; it also took home the Audience Award and Grand Jury Prize in the festival’s U.S. Dramatic Competition. Parker, who wrote, directed and co-produced, also stars as Nat Turner, a slave and preacher who in 1831 led a slave uprising in Georgia. Armie Hammer, Aja Naomi King, Jackie Earle Haley, Penelope Ann Miller and Gabrielle Union all co-star in “The Birth of a Nation,” whose use of the title made famous by D.W. Griffith’s 1915 film is no coincidence.
We’re sure to hear more about the film in the coming months, as an aggressive awards campaign is expected this fall. Fox Searchlight is set to release “The Birth of a Nation” on October 7, 2016.
