Spinoffs are the new sequel. After the opening-weekend success of “The Conjuring 2,” New Line has announced that a new film centering around its villain is in the works. “The Nun” will be written by David Leslie Johnson, who co-wrote the just-released; director James Wan and producer Peter Safran will co-produce.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the nun was a late-breaking addition to “The Conjuring 2.” A “demonic figure with horns” was the primary antagonist until a few months before the film was released, at which point the idea of a demonic nun occurred to Wan and a number of scenes were altered or re-shot.
“The Nun” follows 2014’s “Annabelle,” which served as both a prequel to, and spinoff of, “The Conjuring.” It was a financial success to the tune of some $257 million worldwide, which is another way of saying there’s a sequel in the works as well — “The Conjuring” is fast becoming a cinematic universe all its own.
