“Voltron” will soon return. Netflix is filling ’80s kids’ nostalgia meters by giving the beloved animated series a new name and a new season with “Voltron: Legendary Defender,” the first season of which premieres next week. Avail yourself of the trailer now.
Featuring no diegetic sound but a bevy of footage designed to appeal to fans of the original show, the “ROAR” sneak peak ticks off all the familiar boxes: intergalactic combat, lion-shaped mega-robot piloted by five different astronauts, multi-colored lasers. The aesthetic retains the ’80s vibe of the original show while also looking clean and contemporary, presumably to draw in new viewers and fans of the original alike.
Netflix and DreamWorks Animation announced the project in January. The streaming service’s original programming slate continues to get more expansive, with “BoJack Horseman” and “The Mr. Peabody & Sherman Show” being among its other animated fare. All episodes from season one of “Voltron: Legendary Defender” will be available on June 10, one week before the fourth season of “Orange Is the New Black.”
