“Flatliners” is being revived, and one of its original stars is coming with it. Kiefer Sutherland has joined the remake of the 1990 film after some rescheduling allowed him to also fulfill his obligations to the ABC series “Designated Survivor.” Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, James Norton and Kiersey Clemens are all appearing in the film as well. Deadline first broke the news of Sutherland’s casting.
As of right now, the actor is the only original star returning; Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, Billy Baldwin and Oliver Platt aren’t currently involved. “Flatliners” starred the quintet as a group of medical students who, not unlike kids today playing the knockout game, purposefully stop their own hearts in order to trigger near-death experiences. As you might imagine, this doesn’t end up being the best idea.
The film — not to be confused with the pro-wrestling maneuver of the same name — is being directed by Niels Arden Oplev, who directed the original “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and “Dead Man Down.” Joel Schumacher helmed the 1990 version. “Flatliners” is expected next year but doesn’t have a set release date.
