“Love Between the Covers” is a documentary that follows the lives of five published romance authors and one unpublished newbie as they build their business, cope with the ever-changing world of publishing, and make a living working at their passion, all while the waves of life rage on. These authors build communities and friendships between each other and their readers on social media as well as the real world. Through conferences and meet-ups, these writers inspire others to become writers of their own and embrace their own livelihood.
The film covers a lot of ground: It examines the various romance sub-genres (like inspirational Christian romance to vampire romance), goes behind the scenes at some of romance’s biggest publishing houses, go backstage at a romance novel cover shoot, as well as interviews with some of romance’s biggest stars. Check out an exclusive clip from “Love Between the Covers” below featuring Nora Roberts discussing Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet,” and how it’s not a romance but a tragedy.
The documentary is directed by Laurie Kahn. She previously directed two episodes of PBS’s long-running documentary program “American Experience”: “A Midwife’s Tale,” a docudrama based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning story of Martha Ballard, a midwife and mother living in the wilds of Maine during the chaotic decades following the American Revolution; and “Tupperware!” which tells the stories of Earl Silas Tupper and Brownie Wise, who respectively invented and sold Tupperware to the masses.
“Love Between the Covers” is currently available on iTunes and other digital platforms.
