Ever since earning positive reviews out of the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, Jeff Nichols’ interracial marriage drama “Loving” has been one of the top Oscar contenders to emerge from the first half of the year. Critics have especially singled out the lead performances from Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga, who is already in the middle of a breakthrough year thanks to her badass work on AMC’s “Preacher.”
The drama, which marks Nichols’ second film of the year after the well-reviewed “Midnight Special,” centers around the true story of Richard and Mildred Loving, who spent nine years of marriage fighting for the right to live as a family in their hometown. Their civil rights case went all the way to the Supreme Court in 1967, leading to a landmark ruling that confirmed the very foundation of the right to marry.
In his review of out Cannes, Indiewire’s Chief Film Critic Eric Kohn wrote, “Recounting the plight of Mildred and Richard Loving, who were persecuted by the state of Virginia for their marriage, ‘Loving’ offers no fancy tricks, but benefits from Nichols’ gentle approach, which leaves room for the two performances to shine.”
The film co-stars Michael Shannon and Nick Kroll. Focus Features will release the drama on November 4. Watch the trailer below.
