It’s still too early to get into serious discussions about Oscar contenders, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a few early contenders with serious potential. Even by those expectations, however, nobody could have predicted that a five-part mini-series would become a serious Oscar contender.

Nevertheless, that seems to be the case for “O.J.: Made in America,” the sprawling ESPN documentary that has garnered acclaim on the festival circuit and strong ratings across the country. Could it actually make its way into the best documentary category — and win? That’s the starting point for today’s episode of Screen Talk, in which Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson dig deep into the non-fiction category in addition to tracking other emerging awards season buzz.
