This week, the fall awards season started to take serious shape with the initial announcements of lineups for the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and the Venice Film Festival. Some of these films are surefire Oscar contenders, while others are curiosities that may ignite buying frenzies if they’re good enough. But one thing is certain: We now have a lot of new movies to discuss.

That’s the primary focus of this week’s Screen Talk episode, in which Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson also discuss her recent trip to Michael Moore’s film festival in Traverse City, Michigan, as well as the recent Hollywood star power at the two political conventions. And speaking of politics, Thompson finally saw “Weiner,” Kohn’s favorite movie of the year so far.
