Multimedia Project ‘Black’ Blends Computer Animation with a Tale of Electronic Music

"What would we do if all of a sudden we couldn't start our computers or recharge our telephones?"

Here’s your daily dose of an indie film, web series, TV pilot, what-have-you in progress — at the end of the week, you’ll have the chance to vote for your favorite.

In the meantime: Is this a project you’d want to see? Tell us in the comments.

Logline: “Black” is a love story, but it is above all the story of our habits, it tells the story of what can happen if the things we take for granted every day do vanish.

Elevator Pitch:

“Black” is a cross-media project including a short animated film, a music album and a live electronic music performance. Set during a long blackout in Rome, the film tells the story of Matteo, a young electronic music producer who can’t work anymore because of the sudden event. His neighbor Greta is a writer and, inspired by the blackout, will make Matteo rediscover the pleasure of simple things showing him a different way of expressing himself. The musical album signed by the animated character Matteo will come along with the film next year, followed by a live music act.

Production Team:

Director – Sara Taigher
Sara Taigher is a director and video designer. After graduating in London, she started working in Rome as a motion designer and director of commercials and music videos. She works closely with agencies and collaborates with many different freelance artists and production companies. In 2012 she founded So What with Lorenzo Giordano and Ippolito Simion.

Screenwriter – Lorenzo Bartoli
A screenwriter, comic book writer, director and writer, Bartoli has worked with leading publishers of comics, with Roberto Recchioni (creator of the famous character John Doe) and Grand Guinigi (Lucca Comics and Games). He wrote several episodes for the cartoon “Winx,” collaborates with Disney on the series “Monster Allergy” and “Kylion.”

Music – Inti Ayala Valva
Inti Ayala Valva is an eclectic sound designer and music producer. He produces many different types of music, from pure electronics to deep reggae and rock. His recognizable signs are the constant use of sub-bass frequencies and snare rolls, borrowed from his electronic past.

So What Production deals with video production and post-production creativity. Thanks to the wide experience it gains in motion graphics, shooting, production and post-production from its founding members Sara Taigher, Ippolito Simion and Lorenzo Giordano, So What works alongside with communication agencies, TV networks and film productions, offering creative solutions and technical knowledge and collaborating with established professionals and young talent.

About the Film:

I think the key message behind “Black” is the consciousness that our modern lives are based on things that we usually take for granted, just like electricity. What would we do if all of a sudden we couldn’t start our computers or recharge our telephones? I had the idea for the film because I was scared when I realized I couldn’t lead a life without my computer, due to my job. I’m a motion designer working all the time at the computer. In fact, I chose animation because it was a natural path for me to follow coming from motion design.

Current Status: Crowdfunding campaign to fund mostly animation and backgrounds.
