Ava DuVernay is beloved for her intimate independent films (“I Will Follow,” “Middle of Nowhere”) and prestige dramas (“Selma”), but she’s about to head into blockbuster territory for Disney’s “A Wrinkle Of Time,” based on the beloved science fantasy novel by Madeleine L’Engle. The film will make DuVernay the first person of color to direct a $100 million feature, and it seems like she’s already having the time of her life in pre-production.

Over the last couple weeks, DuVernay has been sharing photos directly to her Twitter page as she travels California and the world with her location scout team to find the perfect locales for her epic adaptation. “A Wrinkle In Time” centers around 13-year-old Meg Murry, who embarks on an epic adventure through the universe to rescue her scientist father with the help of her genius brother, an older classmate and three very peculiar neighbors, one of which will be played by Oprah Winfrey. The story is going to demand some pretty nifty special effects, but DuVernay’s location photos hint that she’s going to try and be as practical as possible.

The photos reveal her team has been looking at epic locales that span the rock formations in Sierra Nevada’s Alabama Hills to oceans and forests across the globe, including New Zealand. These locations wouldn’t be seen in the story’s beginnings, which takes place mostly in Meg’s home, school and neighborhood (which could be the location in photo #3 below), which means these might just be the places DuVernay has her eye on to film the group’s time-traveling journey through the universe. It’s too early to tell, but clearly DuVernay is thinking both big and practical for her upcoming blockbuster.

Check out the location photos below. “A Wrinkle In Time” goes into production next year.
