TNT’s compelling new crime drama “Animal Kingdom” takes on a criminal family, the generations of lost innocence, and a young boy caught in the middle. The series follows Joshua “J” Cody (Finn Cole) who moves in with the rest of his family, a criminal clan governed by fierce matriarch Janine “Smurf” Cody (Ellen Barkin), after the death of his mother. J’s uncles include Barry “Baz” Brown (Scott Speedman), Smurf’s adopted son and robbery leader; Andrew “Pope” Cody (Shawn Hatosy), the mentally disturbed oldest son; Craig Cody (Ben Robson), the party-minded middle son; and Deran Cody (Jake Weary), the closeted youngest son. The series premiered this past June.
The logline for tonight’s penultimate episode of the season reads, “While the Codys go after the biggest score of their lives, the cops put J in an impossible position. Catherine triggers Smurf’s suspicions when she comes over to make amends. Smurf sends Pope to investigate.” Watch an exclusive clip from the episode blwo.
The series is developed by Jonathan Lisco, who previously served as the showrunner on the AMC series “Halt and Catch Fire.” It’s inspired by the 2010 Australian film by the same name, directed by David Michôd, and starring Ben Mendelsohn (“Mississippi Grind”), Joel Edgerton (“The Gift”), Guy Pearce (“Memento”), James Frecheville (“The Stanford Prison Experiment”), Luke Ford (“The Black Balloon”), Jacki Weaver (“Silver Linings Playbook”), who was nominated for an Oscar for her performance, and Sullivan Stapleton (“300: Rise of an Empire”).
“Animal Kingdom” airs at 9pm Eastern on Tuesdays only on TNT. The series was renewed for a second season.
