“Empire” caught on quickly when it first premiered on Fox in January of last year, gaining viewers at a rapid rate — the series premiere drew nearly 10 million, while the season finale drew 17.6. A new trailer has been released ahead of the season-three premiere, with one especially notable new face: Mariah Carey, who’s said to be playing a new character named Kitty. Watch it below.
Terrence Howard, Taraji P. Henson, Bryshere Y. Gray and Jussie Smollett lead the show, which concerns Empire Entertainment and the family who runs it. A number of high-profile actors and musicians have appeared on the show in either recurring or guest roles, including Jennifer Hudson, Courtney Love, Marisa Tomei, Kelly Rowland, Cuba Gooding Jr., Mary J. Blige, Chris Rock and Alicia Keys, among others.
30 episodes have aired across the first two seasons. Season three premieres on September 21, at which time, Howard’s character promises, “We’re going to show them how dark hell can get.”
