In 2014, Damien Chazelle’s second film “Whiplash,” about the relationship between a sociopathic jazz instructor (J.K. Simmons) and a young student (Miles Teller), opened the Sundance Film Festival and eventually won the Audience Award and the Grand Jury Prize. It later racked up three Oscar wins and Chazelle was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay. Now, his next film, the romantic musical “La La Land,” will be the opening night film at the Venice International Film Festival, which starts tomorrow and runs through September 10th. See the brand new festival poster below.
The film stars Emma Stone as an aspiring actress who serves coffee while waiting for the audition to bring her through to the big time. She eventually meets Sebastian, played by Ryan Gosling, a jazz musician relegated to playing in small dive bars in order to pay the rent. They soon fall in love but their relationship is tested by their professional success and the chance of achieving their dreams. This will be the third film that features Gosling and Stone following the 2011 romantic comedy “Crazy, Stupid, Love” and the 2013 action thriller “Gangster Squad.”
“La La Land” will have its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival tomorrow night. It will also screen at the Toronto International Film Festival before its limited release in the United States on December 2nd. It will then expand nationwide on December 16th.
