Director Damien Chazelle has demonstrated that he doesn’t like to be tied down to a single filmmaking genre. His last film “Whiplash,” about a sociopathic jazz instructor (J.K. Simmons) and his obsessive pupil (Miles Teller), was a dark drama about the limitations of ambition. His next film “La La Land” also focuses on ambition, but he takes the opposite route: a romantic musical.
Set in Los Angeles, “La La Land” follows aspiring actress Mia (Emma Stone) who dreams of making it big one day while serving coffee to movie stars. Dedicated jazz pianist Sebastian (Ryan Gosling) plays dingy bars to scrape by and have his talent be heard. The two meet and fall head over heels in love, but soon their respective ambitions threaten to tear them apart. Watch the new trailer below featuring Emma Stone performing the song “Audition.”
The film is written and directed by Damien Chazelle, whose previous film “Whiplash” won three Oscars and took home the Audience Award and the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. He also co-wrote the sci-fi film “10 Cloverfield Lane,” starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Goodman, that was released earlier this year. This will be the third film with Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling on screen together. The first was the romantic comedy “Crazy, Stupid, Love,” and the second was the crime thriller “Gangster Squad.”
