Back at the end of July, Web star Charlene deGuzman launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund her first feature film, “Unlovable.” With the help of Mark Duplass, who assisted by developing the story about a woman’s struggle with sex and love addiction, deGuzman’s project has raised over $48,600 of its $50,000 goal.
Now, Patton Oswalt has signed on as associate producer of the film and Academy Award winner Melissa Leo has jumped onboard to be one of the film’s stars.
Leo will be playing Joy’s (deGuzman’s) sponsor, Maddie, a “strong, grounded, powerful woman that Joy meets at a 12-step meeting for sex and love addiction.”
“Unlovable” follows a Joy, who experiences true intimacy through playing music with a reclusive man. The story is based on deGuzman’s own experience with love and sex addiction, for which she entered a 12-step program in 2014.
“A lot of people have it and they don’t know it exists,” she previously told IndieWire. “I’m really looking forward to bringing awareness to it.”
The movie is being directed by Suzi Yoonessi, produced by Jen Roskind, written by deGuzman and Sarah Adina Smith, with the story by deGuzman and Duplass.
