This winter, Hulu is giving viewers a new psychic drama to binge-watch titled “Shut Eye.” Starring Jeffrey Donovan and KaDee Strickland, the series was created by Les Bohem and takes a look at the gritty underground of con artistry, but with a twist.
The first teaser was revealed Friday during Hulu’s Television Critics Association summer press tour. “Shut Eye” revolves around Charlie Haverford (Donovan), a scammer with a small chain of fortune-telling storefronts and who contracts building tricks for a family that controls the business in the greater chunk of Los Angeles. After a blow to the head from a client’s angry boyfriend intersects with a hypnosis session while he’s auditioning a new “clairvoyant,” he starts to experience visions that change his entire life.
Strickland portrays Charlie’s wife Linda, a woman who is sick and tired of their mediocre life and wants to break away from Fonso (Angus Sampson), the single father who runs the psychic empire and controls the Haverford’s future.
Speaking during the TCA event, Bohem explained his inspiration for the series, “I thought, ‘What if a fake psychic became a real psychic?'” he said. “I loved the idea but had no idea where to set it. … I walked into a parlor in my neighborhood and had my palm read and started to notice there was one on every block. There’s one three blocks from [the Beverly Hilton] in Beverly Hills and they can’t possibly be making rent on a $40 reading.”
Donovan also spoke about what attracted him to the series saying, “Who can tap into that weakness of the educated and the smart? I wanted to investigate that role and what Les has created … it’s a very strange world these people live in and that’s what attracted me to the show… It’s, ‘How does a con artist con a con artist?'”
The show is executive produced by Bohem and Gran Via Productions’ Mark Johnson and Melissa Bernstein.
“Shut Eye” will debut Dec. 7 on Hulu. Check out the first teaser below.
