‘Stranger Things’ Score: Listen to the Haunting Soundtrack That Transports You Back in Time

The music was created by Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein of the Austin band S U R V I V E.

Stranger Things

For those who have watched the Netflix’s hit “Stranger Things” one of the first things you notice is the eerie, nostalgic music that transports you back to the ‘70s and ‘80s. Those hair-raising scenes and suspenseful moments wouldn’t be the same without the vibe that the score adds to it — plus the “Tron”-like intro theme song is quite impressive.

After requests from fans, Netflix is finally releasing a two-part soundtrack, with the first volume out today. Created by S U R V I V E’s Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein, who are making their score debut, the duo jumped on the opportunity to be part of the project after The Duffer brothers reached out to them.

“The [Duffer brothers] reached out to us last July with a trailer they had made using one of our songs. It’s a song called ‘Dirge,’” Dixon told IndieWire. “Once they got greenlit, they reached out to see if we were still a band, if we were still available. We were obviously interested and sent them a bunch of unreleased stuff to listen to in the meantime. And then we started the whole pitch process, giving them some stuff to put in front of producers…We had a little bit of a trial period there, and it ended up working out. So we’re grateful for that.”

The first volume features 36 songs and is now available digitally, with the hard copy set to be released on September 16. The second volume is scheduled for digital release on August 19 and the CD on September 23.

“We discussed having a classic tone and feel to the music for the show but being reserved enough that it wasn’t ‘80s cheese, while offering a refreshing quality so that it felt modern,” Stein said in a press release. “This was one of the qualities that drew them to our music in the first place. Having a familiarity with classic synths worked, but with an overall forward thinking approach.”

Apple Music has a teaser of the full album, “Stranger Things, Vol 1,” and it’s just as haunting and nail-biting as the suspenseful series.

While Netflix has yet to greenlight a second season, in meantime you can take a listen to the soundtrack and enjoy the themes that will transport you back in time.
