‘Nuts!’ Featurette: A Look at the Animation Process of Penny Lane’s Sundance Winner

The exclusive clip takes a look at the character designs and final animation.

After taking home the Special Jury Award for editing at Sundance in January and galloping into theaters in June, Penny Lane’s wacky documentary “Nuts!” is being released on video on demand, with a special deluxe edition of the film made available today on BitTorrent.

IndieWire has an exclusive featurette of the animation process for the film, courtesy of Cartuna. Hazel Santiago created the storyboards and Julia Veldman did the designs and animation.

“Nuts!” follows the “mostly true” story of John Romulus Brinkley, “a Kansas doctor who in 1917 discovered that he could cure impotence by transplanting goat testicles into men.”

Globally released by Cartuna, the BitTorrent Now Bundle includes the documentary, an exclusive archive of Brinkley’s XERA recordings, a collection of Brinkley’s infomercials and home videos, original prints of Brinkley propaganda materials and FCC complaints against Doctor John Brinkley.

“I started dreaming up a film about John Brinkley in 2009, after coming across the book Charlatan in my local public library,” stated Lane in a press release. “In conversations with friends I would mention this guy who transplanted goat testicles into men to cure impotence. And a lot of people would ask me, ‘Well, did it work?’ Well… no, of course it didn’t. But I began to think about how much people want to believe in miracle cures. The weirder the better, really.”

IndieWire’s Eric Kohn gave the film an A-grade. Calling it a “brilliant documentary,” he wrote,  “Combining archival material, voiceovers, contemporary interviews and a variety of hand-drawn animation, the movie deconstructs the process of self-mythologizing from the inside out.”
