‘Passengers’ Trailer: Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt Fall in Love in Space, Then Everything Goes Wrong

In space, no one can hear you...fall in love?

Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt at a special “Passengers” event

Pairing up two of Hollywood’s most bankable — and beloved — movie stars is kind of a no-brainer, but sticking them inside an ambitious (and, for a long time, seemingly ill-fated) sci-fi romance like Morten Tyldum’s “Passengers” is certainly a bit of a gamble. Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt topline Tyldum’s new film, which sees them as “passengers” (cough) on a swanky spaceship heading to a distant colony that runs into some unforeseen issues along the way (the nicest of which appears to be a big, glossy love story, the worst of which might be imminent death).

Pratt stars as a seemingly regular guy — he’s good with his hands! — who has booked passage to the space colony in what seems to be the modern version of steerage. When Pratt’s Jim wakes up from some good old-fashioned cryosleep, he’s initially unbothered by the fact that no one else is up yet. That feeling doesn’t quite last.

Eventually, Jim is joined by Lawrence’s Aurora, who also wakes up for no obvious reason long before the ship is due to dock at its far-flung destination. In a glorious case of “making the best of a bad situation,” Jim and Aurora cavort around the (pretty tricked out) ship, have lots of fun, fall in love and then suddenly realize that, oops, this ship might not be as state of the art as was initially promised. For one thing, their seemingly random waking-up might be indicative of other issues that threaten not only them, but everyone else on board.

Sure, falling in love on a fancy spaceship sounds great, but what’s really going on here? That’s what Jim and Aurora must find out.
