UPDATED: Patton Oswalt’s “Talking For Clapping” won the Best Writing for a Variety Special Sunday night at the 2016 Emmy Awards. Taking the stage to receive his first Emmy, the comedian confessed that he was unprepared as he “didn’t think he was going to win.”
During his brief time on stage, he took a moment to dedicate the trophy to two very special people, one of them his late wife Michelle McNamara, who unexpectedly passed away in April of this year.
“I want to share this with two people. My daughter Alice who is waiting at home. And the other one is waiting somewhere else, I hope,” he beautifully stated.
He also thanked everyone in the category for inspiring him, as well as Netflix, the television academy, his brother and manager, among others.
Oswalt’s wife was known for creating the True Crime Diary blog where she wrote about smaller-profile murder cases such as the Golden State Killer and the murder of nurse Melanie Howell that happened in 1976.
Backstage, Oswalt spoke to the press about what her loss has meant to him: “Every bit of growth I’ve had in my career has come because I met Michelle McNamera… To have that ripped out of my life the way it was this year… the lights have been turned down 50 percent on everything since she’s gone.”
102 days after the death of his beloved, he posted a touching Facebook post about how he was getting back to work.
“I’m going to start telling jokes again soon. And writing. And acting in stuff and making things I like and working with friends on projects and do all the stuff I was always so privileged to get to do before the air caught fire around me and the sun died,” he wrote. “It’s all I knew how to do before I met Michelle. I don’t know what else I’m supposed to do now without her. And not because, ‘It’s what Michelle would have wanted me to do.’ For me to even presume to know what Michelle would have wanted me to do is the height of arrogance on my part. That was one of the many reasons I so looked forward to growing old with her. Because she was always surprising me. Because I never knew what she’d think or what direction she’d go.”
