After striking out big time with the blockbuster misfire “The Lone Ranger,” director Gore Verbinski and screenwriter Justin Haythe are reuniting and scaling things back dramatically for the new psychological thriller “A Cure For Wellness.” Verbinksi has spent much of the past decade with big-budget fare like the Oscar-winning “Rango” and the “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, but let’s not forget he brought expert tension to “The Ring” back in 2002, and here’s hoping “A Cure For Wellness” is a return to that kind of character-based intensity.
The official synopsis: “An ambitious young executive is sent to retrieve his company’s CEO from an idyllic but mysterious ‘wellness center’ at a remote location in the Swiss Alps. He soon suspects that the spa’s miraculous treatments are not what they seem. When he begins to unravel its terrifying secrets, his sanity is tested, as he finds himself diagnosed with the same curious illness that keeps all the guests here longing for the cure.”
“A Cure For Wellness” stars Dane DeHaan, Jason Isaacs and Mia Goth. 20th Century Fox will release the thriller in theaters February 17. Watch the teaser trailer below.
