At the 23rd annual Austin Film Festival, actor and guest programmer Jason Segel presented the film “The Muppets,” which he co-wrote and starred in, as part of the festival’s retrospective series. Prior to the film’s screening, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Segel remarked that he would be open to a “How I Met Your Mother” reunion, reprising his role as Marshall Eriksen on the long-running CBS sitcom.
“I’d be around for whatever those guys wanted to do. It changed my life,” said Segel about series’ creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas. The series followed the adventures of architect Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) and his friends: the long-lasting couple Marshall and Lily (Segel and Alyson Hannigan), news anchor and frequent love interest Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders), and womanizer Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris). It mainly focused on Ted’s quest to find the love of his life, a.k.a the mother of his children.
Segel admits he had no idea about the direction of any potential reunion. “I would leave that to the writers,” he says. “One of the great things about my relationship to that show is I never got involved in the writing, I just tried to execute what these brilliant writers did, so I would leave that to them, as usual.”
The entire run of “How I Met Your Mother” is currently available to stream on Netflix.
