The numbers don’t lie, and they spell disaster for Ben Affleck at Metacritic. Well, not quite: “The Accountant” is receiving middling reviews so far, with Indiewire’s David Ehrlich calling the thriller “a dull movie that’s too full of distractions to pay out any dividends” and giving it a C-.

Soren Andersen is much more positive in The Seattle Times, rating the film 3.5 stars out of 4:

“[Bill] Dubuque’s script is the real star here. He meshes multiple plot elements with smooth expertise. He carefully plants clues throughout the movie that are in essence fuses to revelations that explode in later scenes. Everything in the picture is there for a purpose, and there’s more going on in every scene than initially meets the eye. There are no loose ends here.”

On the opposite end of the spectrum is Time Out New York’s Joshua Rothkopf, whose 1-star review links “The Accountant” to Affleck’s comic-book movies:

“It’s almost as if Affleck’s somber plunge into the calamitous, Nolan-produced ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ has followed him into other projects, like a heavy cologne. Avoid this one like the stink it is.”

In between those two extremes is Tim Grierson of Screen Daily:

“The latest from director Gavin O’Connor (‘Warrior’) is part character study and part airport-novel nonsense, and the film’s utter chutzpah gives the proceedings an agreeable kick. But ‘The Accountant’ can’t balance its B-movie instincts with its more artistic aspirations, ultimately hamstringing a potentially juicy, escapist shoot-‘em-up.”

Variety’s Todd McCarthy finds more to like, however:

“‘The Accountant’ is nothing if not a puzzle — not so much a jigsaw as a three-dimensional brain teaser that gets deeper and stranger with each new revelation.”
