Today marks the fifth anniversary of the Sudden Departure, and to honor the disappearance of 2 percent of the world’s population, HBO is releasing new content for “The Leftovers.” That’s right: You may have lost your entire family five years ago, but today is a day to celebrate!
The party started early this morning when HBO released “The Leftovers” pilot online for free, allowing everyone to sample the pain, misery and brilliance of Damon Lindelof and Tom Perrotta’s 2014 debut. Fans who’ve seen it before can also go back and appreciate the dramatic unveiling of the Garvey family all over again, this time with the added insight of what happened when they were “at their best.”
But then things kicked into high gear with co-creator Damon Lindelof answering fan questions via “snail mail.” Though he refused to tell us where everyone went when they disappeared on Heroes Day (what a jerk, right?), Lindelof did honor the second request: to sing along to “The Leftovers” theme song…like a cat. A few hours later, co-creator Tom Perrotta also released a message to fans, advising them how to properly celebrate October 14. Be advised: Not all of Perrotta’s ideas, particularly the Nora-inspired option, should be taken literally.

IndieWire is serving as a living reminder by featuring its original reviews of “The Leftovers'” pilot and first season. Read them both to see how spot on our early predictions were (things didn’t get any lighter, now did they?) and how poorly we recognized the significance of Reverend Matt’s standalone episode.
“The Leftovers” will debut its third and final season in 2017. Check this page later today for more special releases honoring October 14.
