“You can’t play God without being acquainted with the Devil.”
So goes the big thematic through line of HBO’s latest hit, “Westworld,” which presents a vividly imagined and created world kitted out with unimaginably realistic A.I.-powered robots, most of which exist entirely so that humans can pay to kill them or maim them or screw them or any of a variety of otherwise horrible things. Just two episodes in, and the series has already made the case that the robotic “hosts” are probably going to end up being the far more sympathetic characters. And that’s totally by design.
In a new behind the scenes featurette, the series’ bigwigs — including Jonathan Nolan, Lisa Joy and J.J. Abrams — discuss how the reality of the show’s A.I. takes shape, what it means for the series as a whole and perhaps some hints as to what we can expect as “Westworld” winds on. One thing is for sure, the “Westworld” team is excited about the possibilities they’ve crafted, and you can thank the hosts for that.

“Westworld” airs on HBO on Sunday nights at 9PM.
