Netflix has had quite a bit of success in the true crime realm over the last year. Their series “Making a Murderer,” about the story of Wisconsin native Steven Avery, garnered widespread critical acclaim and plenty of media attention. Now, Netflix returns to the genre with their new series “Captive,” from two-time Oscar-winning producer Simon Chinn (“Man on Wire”) and executive producer Doug Liman (“The Bourne Identity”). The series examines the most challenging hostage situations of our times, from the highest-profile cases to those kept hidden from the public around the globe. It explores the viewpoints of every party involved: the victims, their families, experienced negotiators and the kidnappers themselves. Watch a trailer for the series below.
Though Liman is best known for directing “The Bourne Identity,” he has also directed a number of acclaimed or successful films over the past 20 years: “Swingers,” “Go,” “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” and most recently, “Edge of Tomorrow.” He has also executive produced a few previous TV shows, most notably USA’s “Suits” as well as the drama “Covert Affairs” and the MTV comedy “I Just Want My Pants Back.” Liman recently directed a new VR series “Invisible.”
“Captive” will make its world premiere at DOC NYC tomorrow, November 11. The series will then launch globally on Netflix on December 9.
