With a starry world premiere for “Patriots Day” set to close AFI FEST 2016 this Thursday, distributor CBS Films has released the official trailer, and it’s as emotional as one would expect from a drama centering around the events of the Boston Marathon Bombing. The film is the second collaboration between Mark Wahlberg and Peter Berg to hit theaters this year, following “Deepwater Horizon in September. Along with “Lone Survivor,” the duo have become Hollywood’s go-to source for true stories of American heroism, and “Patriots Day” certainly continues the trend.

Wahlberg stars as Sergeant Tommy Saunders, a composite character based on real members of the Boston Police Department, who leads the manhunt for the Boston Marathon bomber. His efforts are supported by Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis (John Goodman), FBI Special Agent Richard DesLauriers (Kevin Bacon) and Watertown Police Sergeant Jeffrey Pugliese (J.K. Simmons). Berg also includes the stories of those affected by the bombing, including nurses, victims and families all over the city.

“Patriots Day” also stars Michelle Monaghan, Alex Wolff, Melissa Benoist, Rachel Brosnahan and Vincent Curatola. Lionsgate will open the drama in New York, Los Angeles and Boston on December 21, before a nationwide expansion on January 13. Watch the official trailer below.
