One year ago, the “Star Wars” franchise was reawakened with the new film “The Force Awakens,” the beginning of the sequel trilogy that picks up following the events of “Return of the Jedi.” The film was a critical and commercial success, becoming one of the highest-grossing films in history.
But the “Star Wars” train is not stopping anytime soon. Next month, the first film in the “Star Wars Anthology” series, a collection of stand-alone films from the vast “Star Wars” universe, will hit theaters.
The new film “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” will follow the events of “Revenge of the Sith” and pick up shortly before the original “Star Wars.” It will center upon a group of Rebel spies tasked to steal the designs for the Galactic Empire’s new weapon, the Death Star.
Directed by Gareth Edwards (“Godzilla”) and written by Chris Weitz (“About a Boy”) and Tony Gilroy (“Michael Clayton”), “Rogue One” stars Felicity Jones (“The Theory of Everything”), Diego Luna (“Y tu mamá también”), Ben Mendelsohn (“Mississippi Grind”), Donnie Yen (“Shanghai Knights”), Mads Mikkelsen (“Hannibal”) and more.
Watch a new trailer for the film below, which debuted as a part of Disney’s Magical Holiday Celebration on ABC, featuring new battle footage and a longer look at Alan Tudyk’s droid character.
“Rogue One” will be released nationwide on December 16 from Lucasfilm and Walt Disney.
