This past year, Casey Affleck has garnered critical acclaim for his starring role in Kenneth Lonergan’s new film “Manchester by the Sea,” while actress Rooney Mara has appeared in four separate films, including festival favorite “Lion” and the Laika film “Kubo and the Two Strings.” The two haven’t appeared in a film together since David Lowery’s 2013 romantic drama “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints” about an outlaw (Affleck) who escapes from prison to find his wife (Mara) and their daughter that he’s never met. But now via The Film Stage, it’s confirmed that Affleck secretly reunited with Mara and Lowery for a new film shot this past summer. There are no plot or release details at this time. Watch Affleck’s interview with DP/30 where he confirms the existence of the film below.
Lowery first hinted at the project back in a July interview with director James Ponsoldt for Filmmaker Magazine about his Disney film “Pete’s Dragon.” Lowery said that he “wanted to make something small and tiny and handmade.” “I had the urge to just go make something spontaneously, like I used to do,” he said. “I would have an idea and go make it, either a short film or an experimental idea. Over the past few years I stopped doing that as much, and I really wanted to get back in the habit of getting some friends together and shooting something…I basically wrapped [postproduction] on June 10th and the next day flew to Dallas and started working on whatever this thing is that we’re making.”
Meanwhile, Affleck and Lowery are teaming up again for another film “The Old Man and the Gun” with Robert Redford about a Texas bank robber. It’s reported to be Redford’s final acting performance.
