Two weeks ago, Macrocosm Entertainment, in association with Citizen Skull Productions, announced the production of “Street Gang,” a feature-length documentary about the creation and history of beloved, long-running children’s TV series “Sesame Street.” Based in part on Michael Davis’ 2008 New York Times best-selling book by the same name, the film would tell origin story of the story and how creator Joan Ganz Cooney, director Jon Stone, and visionary Jim Henson came out of the ideals and the societal unrest of the sixties to make something that changed history. The producers have launched an Indiegogo campaign to help fund the project.

The film will be directed by Marilyn Agrelo, who previously directed the documentary “Mad Hot Ballroom,” about students from New York City elementary schools who learn ballroom dancing and compete in a city wide dance competition. Agrelo will have access to Sesame Street archives through Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit behind Sesame Street, and The Jim Henson Company.

“I am both honored and excited to tell the story of ‘Sesame Street’s’ beginnings,” said Agrelo, “and the brilliant group of people who set out to radically change the way TV shapes our lives.”

There are 16 days left to donate to the Indiegogo campaign, which has already reached over half of its goal. Head to the campaign page to see the featured perks for backers of the campaign. Additionally, the filmmakers will donate 15% of the net proceeds of the crowd funding campaign to Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit educational media organization behind “Sesame Street.” The team hopes to begin production in late fall of this year.
