Few movies this year will send a chill up your spine quite like Nicolas Pesce’s grisly debut “The Eyes Of My Mother.” The film shocked Sundance audiences at the beginning of this year, where IndieWire Chief Film Critic Eric Kohn went on to call it the biggest discovery of the festival. The movie centers around the relationship between a disturbed young woman (breakout Kika Magalhães) and the murderer she has locked up in her family’s barn. To spoil how and why these circumstances come to be would be a crime, but just know the movie is not for the faint of heart.

Last month, Magnet Releasing premiered a bold new trailer that was essentially one scene from the movie (a memorable encounter between the woman and her bloodied prisoner), and now they’ve gone ahead and debuted the chilling opening on Entertainment Weekly. The scene depicts a dark chance encounter on a rural highway, and if the black-and-white imagery wasn’t morbid enough, Pesce simmers the unnerving atmosphere with a fixed camera position and an old country radio tune.
