In March of 2017, the world wil finally see the live-action version of the classic anime film “Ghost in the Shell,” starring Scarlett Johansson as The Major alongside Pilou Asbæk (“Borgen”), Takeshi Kitano (“Battle Royale”) and Juliette Binoche (“The English Patient”). Johansson’s casting has received quite a bit of backlash for its alleged whitewashing of Asian identity, shrouding the film in controversy since earlier this year. For those eager to see the original vision on the big screen, Mamoru Oshii’s “Ghost in the Shell” will return to UK theaters this January for one night only. Watch a trailer for the release below.
Based on the manga written and illustrated by Masamune Shirow, the film follows Major Motoko Kusanagi as she leads an elite team of agents in hunting down a malicious hacker known only as Puppet Master. The film served as a major influence on future sci-fi films, especially “The Matrix,” as The Wachowski’s supposedly showed the film to producer Joel Silver saying that they wanted to “do that for real.”
Before that, the original will be in UK cinemas on 25 January, for one night only. A US theatrical release is also planned, with the date still to be confirmed. For participating theaters, visit the official website.
