Sean Stone is keeping it in the family for his next project as writer/director: an adaptation of his father Oliver’s novel “A Child’s Night Dream.” The younger Stone has already written a screenplay based on the book, which the Academy Award–winning filmmaker wrote when he was 19 and serving in the military. Deadline first broke the news.

Set in Vietnam and based on the “Platoon” and “Born on the 4th of July” director’s own experiences, “A Child’s Night Dream” was first published in 1997. The story will be moved to the aftermath of 9/11 for the film adaptation. Now 31, Sean says he’s been working on the adaptation since he was 15.

“My own high school and early college years informed the script, and helped it evolve from the time period my father set it in,” he told Deadline. “The themes included understanding my own relationship to my parents, my first crush and the backdrop of 9/11 and the Iraq War.”
