“Baby knows what to do. Baby will tell you what to do. It’s just nature’s way.”
Alice Lowe’s feature directorial debut, “Prevenge,” isn’t your everyday pregnancy comedy. It’s not even your everyday revenge horror thriller. It’s somehow both, all in one delightfully dark package.
Lowe is perhaps best known for her work co-scripting Ben Wheatley’s predictably funny and twisted “Sightseers,” which should give some insight into the British filmmaker’s special brand of humor and horror. For “Prevenge,” she goes all-in, not just directing and writing the feature, but also starring in it as Ruth, a heavily pregnant widow who lashes out at the world around her in some very unexpected ways.
There’s no way around it: Her unborn baby starts talking to her. And telling her to kill people. What could possibly go wrong? Oh, just about everything, but the film’s first trailer gives a sharp look at just how Lowe’s vision comes together, equal parts terror and pure amusement. The film debuted at Venice earlier this year, and went on to play at TIFF, London and AFI FEST.
“Prevenge” will open in the UK in February, and does not yet have a U.S. release date set. Let’s hope that changes very soon. Check out the first trailer for “Prevenge” below.
