This was a big week for awards season. It started Monday with the Gotham Awards, the flashy New York ceremony for independent film, where “Moonlight” won big. Then came the National Board of Review’s nominations, where “Manchester By the Sea” came out on top, followed by a best picture win for “La La Land” from the New York Film Critics Circle. That same day, all three movies also landed nominations from the Critics Choice Awards. Needless to say, it’s looking like we have quite the varied trio of best picture contenders.
But is that a fair assumption to make at this stage of the game? That question provides the starting point for this week’s episode of Screen Talk, as Eric Kohn and Anne Thompson debate these developments and touch on which films didn’t make the cut to get a better sense of what might happen in the weeks to come.
