Darren Aronofsky often gives actresses some amazing supporting roles (see Jennifer Connolly in “Requiem for a Dream,” Marisa Tomei in “The Wrestler,” Mila Kunis in “Black Swan”), and “mother!” is shaping up to be no exception. The marketing thus far has primarily concerned leads Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem, but co-star Michelle Pfeiffer finally gets her due in the first official clip, embedded below, and it’s a juicy one.
Pfeiffer is playing the wife of Ed Harris’ character, one of two uninvited guests who show up and wreak havoc on Jennifer Lawrence’s protagonist. The official trailer suggests that Lawrence’s husband, played by Bardem, is in on whatever disturbing plans Pfeiffer and Harris have in store. The first clip finds Pfeiffer devilishly asking Lawrence about whether or not she wants to have a child. The “Rosemary’s Baby” vibes are palpable.
Aronofsky recently launched the website youllneveranswerthedooragain.com, which brings you to a kaleidoscope version of the movie’s latest poster. Moving your mouse across the webpage spins the image, and when you match up the kaleidoscope in a certain way the title “mother!” appears, as does the repetitive image of a pregnant Jennifer Lawrence. Whether or not Lawrence’s character is pregnant at the beginning of the film or is impregnated later remains to be seen, but Pfeiffer is clearly interested in her motherhood and probably has bad plans for her child.
“mother!” will be premiering at the Venice Film Festival and screening at TIFF before opening in theaters September 15.
