The reviews are in, and “mother!” is even more insane than all the trailers and viral marketing stunts suggest. Darren Aronofsky’s psychological horror film premiered at the Venice Film Festival today and earned some of craziest reviews of the year so far, with critics calling it everything from a “berserk feast of filth” to a “sickeningly glorious mess.”
IndieWire’s A- review hailed “mother!” has Aronofsky’s most daring movie to date. “The auteur’s super-secret new psychological horror is a nightmarish dreamscape,” wrote critic Ben Croll. “It does not disappoint.”
On the heels of the first round of reviews, Aronofsky is keeping the marketing campaign in full drive by releasing a new promo for movie, which includes never-before-seen footage and an introduction to every major character. The video is also home to the first public sighting of Jennifer Lawrence’s character’s baby bump. She plays the wife of Javier Bardem and the victim of uninvited guests to their home.
The baby theme is quickly becoming the staple of the film’s marketing. Paramount released a “Rosemary’s Baby” inspired poster last month, and the film’s Instagram account has updated one of its posts so that the audio has Javier Bardem’s character repeating the phrase, “Let me hold my baby.”
“mother!” opens in theaters nationwide September 15. Watch the new footage below.
