For those looking for proof of what fandom can achieve, behold: The script for the “‘Sense8 Special,” which will wrap up the fan favorite Netflix drama following its abrupt cancelation this spring, physically exists!
While initially canceled following the release of Season 2, fan outcry led Netflix to reverse that decision and produce a two-hour finale, and as seen in the Instagram photo above from star Miguel Angel Silvestre (who plays no-longer-closeted movie star Lito on the show), watermarked scripts have been distributed to the actors.
Beyond proof-of-life, the cover page reveals a number of important details about the upcoming production. For one thing, Lana J. Wachowski (the first time she’s used the letter J with her name?) is credited with writing the script alongside David Mitchell and Aleksandar Hemon. Both men are novelists, with Mitchell having a pre-established connection to the Wachowski tribe: He wrote the original novel “Cloud Atlas,” which Lana Wachowski, Lilly Wachowski, and Tom Tykwer adapted as a feature film in 2012.
Hemon, meanwhile, is a MacArthur grant-winning writer, born in Bosnia, whose novels include “Nowhere Man” and “The Lazarus Project.” His Wachowski connection? As a contributor to the New Yorker, he wrote a 2012 feature on the production of “Cloud Atlas,” which also addressed Lana’s coming-out as a trans woman (Lilly had not yet come out at that time).
In addition to discovering the writing credits for the script, Silvestre has provided some additional information: handwritten notes which list four locations: Berlin, “Bruselas” (the Spanish word for Brussels), Paris, and “Napoles” (Spanish for Naples). Nothing’s confirmed yet, of course, but it does seem to indicate that the series finale will be a largely European affair.
Starring Silvestre, Toby Onwumere, Tina Desai, Jamie Clayton, Tuppence Middleton, Doona Bae, Brian J. Smith and Max Riemelt, “Sense8” Season 2 ended on a cliffhanger in which the Sensates, bound together by a mysterious psychic connection, attempt to grab back power from the evil corporation attempting to hunt them down.
The “Sense8” series finale special is set to premiere sometime in 2018, while Seasons 1 and 2 are streaming now on Netflix.
