The “Hellboy” franchise may be moving forward without the involvement of Guillermo del Toro, but “Pacific Rim” isn’t so foolish. The visionary director may not be behind the camera for the long-awaited sequel, “Pacific Rim: Uprising,” but he’s a producer on the project and has been in the development process ever since the original was released in summer 2013. Steven S. DeKnight, the creator of Starz’s “Spartacus” television franchise, is handling directing duties.
“Uprising” is set 10 years after the events of the first movie and stars John Boyega as Jake Pentecost, the son of Idris Elba’s character. Jake was once a promising young Jaeger pilot but has since fallen into the criminal underworld. When his half-sister Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi) offers him a chance at redemption by rejoining the Jaeger program, Jake gets thrust in a robots vs. monster battle that will surely be a brain-melter on the big screen. Scott Eastwood co-stars as Jake’s rival pilot, Nate Lambert.
Legendary Pictures is releasing “Pacific Rim: Uprising” in theaters March 23, 2018. Watch the first trailer below.
