“Get Out,” “Girls Trip,” and “Marshall” will compete for five NAACP Image Awards apiece in mid-January, when the ceremony returns for its 49th year. “At a moment where there seems to be one tragic event after another in America, the NAACP Image Awards continues to be a beacon of light to the diversity reflected in television, music, film and literature that brings everyone together,” said NAACP president and CEO Derrick Johnson in an official statement. Universal Pictures, which released “Get Out” and “Girls Trip,” is the most-honored distributor, ahead of Annapurna (“Detroit”) and Open Road Films (“Marshall”).
Nominees were announced today in more than 50 categories. “Mudbound” actress Mary J. Blige tied JAY-Z with the most individual nominations (also five), with “Insecure” co-creator Issa Rae and others vying for four Atlas-inspired statuettes. First-time contenders include Tiffany Haddish, who received recognition for both “Girls Trip” and her voice work on the Comedy Central series “Legends of Chamberlain Heights.”
The more-nominated platform or network is Netflix, which picked up 23 nods, including multiple for “Dear White People,” “Master of None,” and “Orange Is the New Black.” OWN trailed with 17 entries, and its founder/CEO, Oprah Winfrey, was also singled out for her starring role on HBO’s “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.” Recent “Saturday Night Live” host Chance the Rapper will attempt to best Bruno Mars, “Marshall” lead Chadwick Boseman, Rae, JAY-Z, and Winfrey’s “A Wrinkle in Time” director Ava DuVernay for the Entertainer of the Year trophy.
Anthony Anderson — the reigning Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series for “black-ish” — will host the proceedings for the fifth time, which air live on TV One this January 15. At last year’s event, “black-ish” notched three wins, while future Best Picture Oscar nominee “Hidden Figures” won twice. Find the full list of nominees below.
