BAFTA Awards Dominated by ‘Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,’ as ‘Dunkirk’ Lags

Many BAFTA winners will move on to the Oscars on March 4.

“Darkest Hour”

As ever, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts nominations for the EE British Academy Film Awards favor homegrown fare. Thus many nomination slots that might have included such Hollywood films as “The Post” or “Wonder Woman” went to the likes of “Dunkirk,””Darkest Hour,” and “Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool.”

Leading the BAFTA nominations field was Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water” with 12 nominations. But the Mexican filmmaker wound up taking home Best Director and the film won Production Design and Score. With wins at the Critics Choice, Golden Globe, Directors Guild and BAFTA, the directing Oscar is Del Toro’s to lose.

“Darkest Hour” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” followed with nine nominations each; “Darkest Hour” settled for wins for Best Actor Gary Oldman as Winston Churchill and Best Hair and Makeup, while “Three Billboards” dominated the night with five wins: Best Picture, Best British Film, Original Screenplay Martin McDonagh, Best Actress Frances McDormand and Best Supporting Actor Sam Rockwell. The two actors look solid for eventual Oscar wins.

McDormand delivered the night’s most rousing speech: “As Martin said, I have a little trouble with compliance. But I want you to know I stand in full solidarity with my sisters tonight in black.”

It was a good night for Fox Searchlight, which released both “Three Billboards” and “The Shape of Water.”

“I, Tonya” with five nominations scored one win, for Best Supporting Actress Oscar frontrunner Allison Janney. For the first time, the same four actors all won awards from Critics Choice, Golden Globe, SAG, and BAFTA (without winning a single major critics group prize).

“Blade Runner”

“Blade Runner 2049” and “Dunkirk” boasted eight nominations each. Roger Deakins won Best Cinematography (his fourth BAFTA win) en route to trying to land his first Oscar after winning the ASC award Saturday. “Blade Runner” also notched a VFX win, while “Dunkirk” –even with a home field advantage — could have used a boost from more wins than Best Sound. Edgar Wright’s “Baby Driver” scored Best Editing.

“Call Me by Your Name” and “Phantom Thread” had four nominations each, winning Best Adapted Screenplay for James Ivory, who looks like a lock for the Oscar (after winning the WGA and the USC Scripter awards) and Best Costume respectively, also expected to win on Oscar night.

“Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool,” “Lady Bird” and “Paddington 2” with three nominations each went home empty-handed. British “Get Out” star Daniel Kaluuya won the Rising Star Award, voted on by the public.

The EE British Academy Film Awards unfolded on Sunday February 18 at the Royal Albert Hall, London. The ceremony was hosted by new host Joanna Lumley, replacing Stephen Fry, and was broadcast exclusively on BBC One and BBC One HD as well as major territories around the world. The US views the edited BBC America awards show at 8 pm Eastern.
