“The Karate Kid” went and pulled itself a Terminator. Three decades after “The Karate Kid” kicked its way into theaters, a new generation of the story is turning a villain into the good guy. YouTube Red unveiled the first full look at “Cobra Kai,” the nostalgia-fueled TV project that chooses not to follow Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio), but his one-time enemy Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka).
“Cobra Kai” steps inside Johnny’s dojo as he trains a new group of karate recruits, presumably in a quest to get some long-gestating revenge against Daniel. (By the way, Daniel owns a car dealership now!) Johnny looks like he’s hard at work making sure the old Cobra Kai dojo gets a helpful rebrand, but moving beyond the rivalry between these two, there’s room for some high school ups and downs too.
Macchio and Zabka serve as executive producers on the series, the brainchild of creators Hayden Schlossberg, John Hurwitz, and Josh Heald. “Cobra Kai” is part of this year’s upcoming Tribeca TV lineup, but will drop on YouTube Red just in time for summer break.
