Time’s Up pins have been a common sighting at awards shows since the Golden Globes, and tonight they’ll be joined by another activist accessory: orange American flags. People reports that a number of celebrities attending the Academy Awards will be donning the pins in support of Everytown for Gun Safety, whose efforts have gained renewed interest since 17 people were killed in a mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.
Jessica Mindich, a jewelry designer whose Caliber Collection melts down guns and turns them into jewelry, explains the choice of color: “Orange is the color of solidarity in the fight against gun violence in America. It may seem like a simple statement — but when we all act together, we can’t be ignored. 100 percent of the profits from each bracelet is donated to the Caliber Foundation to help the victims and communities devastated by illegal guns in America.”
Founded in 2014, after Mayors Against Illegal Guns and Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America merged, Everytown works to “support efforts to educate policy makers, as well the press and the public, about the consequences of gun violence and promote efforts to keep guns out of the hands of criminals.” Michael Bloomberg founded and finances the group.
