If the Steven Soderbergh-produced “The Girlfriend Experience” taught us anything, it’s that if you’re in a Starz series and a young hopeful professional in a cutthroat industry and a fashionably dressed Paul Sparks character is your boss, it might be best to keep some distance.
“Sweetbitter,” the latest drama set for a May release date later this spring on Starz, takes its cue from the 2016 Stephanie Danler novel. Tess (Ella Purnell) is an ambitious young New Yorker making her way through the kitchens of Manhattan, whose tastes lead her into some dangerous situations in and outside of work. It might be set in 2006, but this looks nearly as crisp as anything Starz has put on air in recent years.
Sparks, fresh off a strong supporting turn in “Waco,” plays Howard, the restaurant manager who interviews Tess. The series ensemble, aside from Purnell, includes “UnREAL” Season 3 star Caitlin FitzGerald, in addition to Tom Sturridge, Evan Jonigkeit, Daniyar, Eden Epstein, and Jasmine Mathews. The series comes from showrunner Stu Zicherman and Brad Pitt’s Plan B production company.
At the very least, we’re grateful that Tess added a few words in between “sweet” and “bitter” in that last line. We know what happens when characters say titles.
