Netflix is already having an exceptional year when it comes to new original series thanks to titles like “Wild Wild Country,” “On My Block,” and “Lost In Space,” but the greatest offering might still be yet to come. The streaming giant has debuted the first look at “Maniac,” the upcoming limited series from “True Detective” and “Beasts of No Nation” director Cary Fukunaga. “Superbad” duo Emma Stone and Jonah Hill star in the lead roles.

“Maniac” is based on a 2014 Norwegian series and centers around a psychiatric experiment where patients can live inside their own dreams and fantasies. The 10-episode Netflix series is directed entirely by Fukunaga and written by novelist Patrick Somerville. Supporting characters are played by Justin Theroux, Julia Garner, Sonoya Mizuno, Jemima Kirke, and Sally Field.

The project is Fukunaga’s first directorial effort since his Netflix original film “Beasts of No Nation.” The filmmaker is most famous for his Emmy-winning work directing “True Detective” Season 1, and he recently helped create the TNT serial killer drama series “The Alienist.”

Netflix has not yet announced a release date for “Maniac,” but the show is expected to drop later this year. The first look photos introduce the characters played by Stone and Hill, and the image below seems to depict the technological device used to bring patients into their dream world.
