IFC Films is gearing up for the world premiere of Lars von Trier’s “The House That Jack Built” at Cannes next month, and the studio is getting ready by debuting a handful of new first look photos from the serial killer drama. The image above provides our first look at Uma Thurman as one of Jack’s victims. The drama marks a reunion between Thurman and von Trier following “Nymphomaniac.”
“The House That Jack Built” stars Matt Dillon as the titular serial killer. Von Trier’s story, set in America during the 1970s, follows Jack through the five murders that shape his development as a serial killer. Jack is trying to create the ultimate art work: A collection of all his killings manifested in a House that he builds. Along the way, Jack must battle his own personality and avoid a growing police presence on his trial.
In addition to Thurman, actresses Riley Keough, Siobhan Fallon Hogan, and Sofie Gråbøl are also playing Jack’s victims. Keough makes her von Trier debut in the first image below. Additional images show Jack handling a bloodied body bag and what looks to be Jack in the early stages of building the titular house. Von Trier has warned that the film will be his most brutal offering to date, and both the synopsis and the new images suggest he isn’t lying.
“Jack” will debut Out of Competition at Cannes next month. The premier marks Trier’s much-publicized return to the festival after being named a “persona non grata” in 2011 for comments he made during the “Melancholia” press conference. IFC Films has not yet announced a release date for the movie, but it is expected to open later this year.
