Jessica Lange’s Constance Langdon is returning to the Murder House. During the “American Horror Story: Apocalypse” panel at the Television Critics Association press tour, fellow cast member Sarah Paulson announced the Season 1 star will be back for the crossover season.
“I have the great pleasure of letting you all know, yes, she will be back,” Paulson said. “Jessica will be returning as Constance in an episode I’m going to direct.”
Paulson is making her directorial debut with Episode 6 of “AHS: Apocalypse,” and she’s doing so with her longtime co-star, two-time Oscar winner, and three-time Emmy winner Lange. Though she co-starred in Ryan Murphy’s limited series “Feud” in 2017, Lange hasn’t been in “AHS” since Season 4 (2015’s “Freak Show”).
As for the plot of the new season, executive producer Alexis Martin Woodall was a little more generous than normal with information.
“I’m just going to say one thing: The story begins with the end of the world, and then our world begins,” Woodall said. “It starts in the real world. It’s very tangible, and it’s a familiar hammock.”
“It’s the end of the world,” Paulson emphasized. “The end of the world. It’s the biggest–” and then she cut herself off, looking to her co-stars for fear of spoiling any details.
One critic asked about for details about the rumored “devil child” to appear in Season 8.
“If we’re here, the world didn’t totally end,” Woodall said. “There’s a mystery to the show that’s better unfolded. […] Unfortunately, I can’t give you specifics about what the devil child will do.”
“But it ain’t pretty,” Paulson said.
Ryan Murphy previously described Season 8 as a “crossover” between Season 1 (“Murder House”) and Season 3 (“Coven”). Set in the near-future, Murphy said “Apocalypse” is “unlike anything we’ve done because there’s a big hook to it. There’s a huge thing that happens in Episode 5.”
The cast (so far) includes Paulson, Evan Peters, Kathy Bates, Billie Lourd, Adina Porter, and Evan Peters, as well as three newcomers to the “AHS” world: Joan Collins, Jeffrey Bowyer-Chapman, and Kyle Allen.
When asked if any more former cast members will return, Woodall said it was possible and asks went out to select members of “AHS: Coven.”
“[Ryan Murphy] invited all the witches to return,” she said. “Whether or not they return is TBD.”
Those in attendance went down the line to confirm their character names, which were revealed as follows:
- Leslie Grossman will play Coco St. Pierre Vanderbilt
- Billie Lourd will play Mallory
- Adina Porter will play Diana Stevens
- Emma Roberts will play Madison Montgomery
- Kathy Bates will play Miss Meade
- Sarah Paulson will play three roles: Venable, Cordelia, and Billy Dean
Earlier on Friday, the series — which has already been renewed for Season 9 — was picked up for a tenth season. “American Horror Story Apocalypse” is shooting now. Season 8 will premiere September 12 on FX.
